Today is a special day. We honor our loving mothers. It is important to tell our mothers we love and respect them every chance we get, not just on mother’s day. We remember with deep gratitude all the ways they demonstrated their love for us. We thank our Almighty Lord for our mothers who carried us in their wombs, nourishing, protecting, and bringing us into the world.
A mother’s love is endless self-sacrifice, devotion and commitment that will remain in our hearts forever forging the character of the next generation. Her passion and commitment to her family is truly inspiring. A mother’s unconditional love is the foundation of the entire family. Her love is the glue that holds us together.
Loving God, bless our most beloved mothers and may they always be loved and cherished. let their joy be contagious and let their lives overflow with all the blessings they deserve and help us to be grateful and helpful to our beloved mothers.
Happy mother’s day to our most beloved St. James Mothers!
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Throughout the entire history of our world, people have conquered countries. Kings have strived to conquer large territories. Emperors have conquered entire nations. But there is one unexplored territory that has not been conquered by anyone. This unconquered territory is the human heart, and its only conqueror is our Lord, Jesus Christ the king.
On Sunday March 28, 2021, we will celebrate one of the great feasts of our Christian Church calendar, Palm Sunday. We will celebrate our Lord’s triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem and also as the king who enters our hearts, our own personal Jerusalem.
We are very pleased to announce that our church doors are open again and we encourage all St. James parishioners to attend our church services during Holy Week. In the interests of public safety, we are required to respect the California social distancing guidelines.
On Sunday, as we receive with our children our Palm branches during the procession, let us take them to our homes and Let the Palms remind us that Christ is the king of our hearts and He is the only true answer to happiness and meaning in our lives.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian

Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Our Lord Jesus Christ, recruiting his disciples, he was based on frankness and sincerity. He did not try to attract His followers by promising wealth, earthly glory and happiness. On the contrary, He told them clearly, what they were expected to give up, and to suffer, if they wished to follow Him: “If anyone will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matthew 16:24
During the Great lent, we must willingly and boldly follow our Lord, wherever He leads us. As disciples of Christ we are invited to carry our cross in life not only in imitation of Christ, but also because we are sinners, and carrying the cross helps to strengthen our spiritual powers, thus enabling us to avoid temptations running into the arms of our Loving Heavenly Father, like the Prodigal Son, asking for forgiveness and mercy, strongly believing that our compassionate Lord will always embrace us with his unconditional love.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Everyone knows that Lent is a period of abstinence from food. We renounce some types of foods like meat, dairy products etc. However, the Christian understanding of fasting is much more meaningful than simply “giving up” something. Abstaining from food, is not a goal in itself, but just a gate to greater things.
Fasting is an attempt to live closer to our Lord, trusting completely in His loving care. During Lent almsgiving, should be part of our personal journey to God. Our sacrificial giving teaches us how to love, how to care following the example of Christ, who sacrificed everything for us.
Finally, Lent is a journey to an intimate encounter through prayerful life. Prayer is a personal conversation with God. Shutting the door of our hearts to the world, we find God in the silence of a simple prayer. Lent helps mediate this encounter and restore us in the grace of God.
On March 6, the Western Diocese will be hosting the 5th annual RECLAIM Conference. It is an on-line event this year. It is a Zoom conference. I strongly encourage you to participate in this most enriching and inspiring conference. There is an article in this newsletter about the registration for people who are able to participate.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Last Thursday, Armenians throughout the world commemorated the national feast of St. Vartanantz. In the middle of the fifth century the Persian king Hazkert attempted to impose Zoroastrianism on all of his subjects, including the Armenians. The Armenians refused to renounce their Christian faith. In 451 AD on the field of Avarayr, outnumbered Armenian fighters faced a mighty Persian army. St. Vartan the chief commander of the Armenian Army and his companions fought very courageously against the enemy in order to preserve the Armenian identity and Christian religion. Vartan together with more than a thousand of his soldiers were martyred that day. Since, Vartan has become a symbol of bravery, patriotism, and unfading faith.
On February 7, 2021, our own and most beloved Rev. Fr. Vazken Movsesian during the Divine Liturgy at St. Leon Cathedral was recognized as Priest of the Year by our Primate His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. Honoring Fr. Vazken our Primate stated. "In recognition of his unwavering ministry, visionary leadership, and numerous accomplishments in the life of the Armenian community in North America, we recognize the Rev. Fr. Vazken Movsesian as the Priest of the Year."
On behalf of his St. James family, I wish my dear brother in Christ, Rev. Fr. Vazken Movsesian a very long healthy life and may his pastoral ministry continue to be filled with our Lord's abundant blessings, grace and joy.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Great Lent is the time of repentance and preparation for the Feast of the Resurrection of Christ. It is a time of renewed devotion, prayer and fasting. We invite and encourage St. James faithful to take this opportunity to renew themselves, their minds and hearts in Christ.
The Lenten Vigil Husgoom services will be held on Wednesdays starting February 17, 2021 at 7pm, followed by other five services until March 24, 2021.
Unfortunately, this year we won’t be able to attend in person these most beautiful Husgoom services. However, you will be given the opportunity to pray with us during these vigil services. If you wish to read a prayer from “I confess with faith – “Havadov Khosdovanim” St. Nerses Shnorhali’s most uplifting 24 prayers, I could suggest you a prayer to be read either in Armenian or English and after recording yourself using your smart phone or your laptop, you may send me the video on my cellphone by text message.
Should have any questions, please reply to this email or contact me on my cell or calling St. James during the church office hours: 9am-5pm.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
This year, on January 30th the Armenian church celebrated the Feast of St. Sarkis the Captain, his son Mardiros and his soldiers/companions.
For Armenians, Captain St. Sarkis was one of the most beloved saints. Together with his 14 soldiers-companions, unfortunately he was martyred in Persia for the sake of Christian faith, when he refused to obey the Persian king Shapouh’s order to worship the fire and idols.
St. Sarkis the Captain is the patron Saint of youth. Many miracles happen thanks to his intercession. On the day of the feast young people pray to the saint asking him to make their prayers audible to God.
On the day of the feast, people in love presented each other with gifts, flowers, and sweets. Some people think that St. Sarkis Day is the Armenian version of Valentine’s Day. There is a beautiful tradition. Single girls eat a salty cookie named in Armenian "Aghablit" and afterwards go to bed thirsty, hoping for their future groom to appear in their dream bringing them some water. There have been many stories of individuals who have seen their future spouses in their dream and married them soon after! Superstition or not, celebrating the feast day and preparing the Salty cookies/Aghablit is fun and has become a part of the Armenian traditions.
In today's Oshagan newsletter you will read a very beautiful article penned by our Primate His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian, about a book Between Heaven and Earth, "which reflects the faith of the late Catholicos Karekin I".
Back in 1980s, when I was a seminarian in Lebanon, it was a great honor and privilege for me being a student of Karekin I. His Holiness taught me Armenian Church History and Pastoral Theology. Karekin I of blessed memory was my role model, exceptional mentor and great inspiration to serve the Armenian church. May our Merciful Lord illuminate his soul in peace!
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
On Sunday January 24, 2021 unfortunately the weather does not permit to celebrate outdoors the Divine Liturgy. We will conduct closed doors services, however, you may watch the services LIVE on our church Facebook and website and pray with us.
This month St. James family lost two amazing parishioners; Rosine Kizirian and Felix Badawy.
Our sweetest Rosine was an earthy angel. She dedicated her time and energy serving with an exemplary dedication and love to her beloved St. James church and its organizations; Church Choir, Ladies Society, Mr. & Mrs. Club, Fellowship Club and Sunday School. She touched so many hearts with her kindness and warmest smile. She will be Immensely missed by all.
My dear parishioner Felix always greeted me with a big and warm smile coming from the depths of his loving heart. Felix was my most beloved French speaking friend and the Godly faithful parishioner, who regularly and prayerfully attended our church services with his other half Peggy. Today both of them are shining stars in heaven!
In today's Oshagan newsletter you will read another beautiful article authored by our Primate His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian, reflections on Archbishop Desmond Tutu's Book "God is Not a Christian". In the upcoming weeks, Hovnan Surpazan will introduce us very renowned religious celebrities and their literary legacies. Enjoy!
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear Parishioners and Friends
2020 was an unprecedented year for all of us. We never expected that a microorganism called Covid19 could cause so much chaos affecting our lives and livelihood. There’s a beautiful saying “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor”. By going through rough times, we are able to become resilient and stronger in our faith in our Lord. Our Loving and compassionate God will not leave us nor forsake us. 2021 will be another year for us to love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind. We pray that as we navigate through the year, we will be guided by God’s wisdom and strengthened by his divine protection and mercy. In today’s Oshagan newsletter you’ll have the opportunity to read very beautiful articles penned by our Primate His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian about a book authored by Pope Francis titled “Let us Dream, the Path to a Better Future.” Hovnan Surpazan states that “this most uplifting book is the response to the crisis of COVID‐19, which truly has challenged the world” and concludes the articles saying “Let us Dream” is the vaccine for the wounded souls of humanity. Inasmuch as we need to fight the pandemic and stop the spread of the virus, equally and more so, we need the “spiritual vaccine” for the human soul. Humanity is challenged to have the wakeup call and embark on a journey in search of God.”Dear Parishioners, In these uncertain times this great book and our beloved Primates most uplifting reflections will be great remedy for all people who are hurting and need our Merciful Lord’s spiritual comfort and peace.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear Parishioners,
Despite limitations imposed by the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, we celebrated the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Jesus Christ on January 6. The sky was bright, there was a gentle breeze and approximately 40 parishioners were present to participate in the outdoor services. Fr. Haroutioun celebrated the Divine Liturgy and the Blessing of the Water Ceremony was conducted by Fr. Vazken Movsesian in the annual commemoration of Christ's birth and baptism. During the Blessing of the Water ceremony Fr. Vazken introduced Anthony Avedis Bolsajian, as the Godfather of the Cross.Following church services, parishioners enjoyed coffee and refreshments and the opportunity to visit with fellow parishioners. . Special thanks to the Ladies Society for a table laden with a wide variety of cookies and baked goods, as well as to parishioners who also brought cakes and cookies.Thank you to Michael Tachejian, Yeghia der Aprahamian, Ann Iskenderian, Fimi and Vartan Zerounian for assisting in the Narthex and to Sona Mkrtumian for managing the video for live streaming.

This year has proven to be a challenging one for all of us. In such an unpredictable year, there is no way to capture the profound challenges everyone has to face, both personally and professionally. All we can do is share our appreciation and deep admiration for the innovative and creative ways our members of the Parish Council and all our church organizations have undertaken to meet our needs. We are also grateful to our parishioners for their love and support.
This Holiday Season will be unquestionably different for all of us. As we face the challenges of 2021, let us continue to have faith. There is still much to be thankful for. We wish you peace and good health this Christmas and, hopefully a better New Year.

St. James Parish Council
Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Christian worship and church social and educational life over the world appears to have been considerably altered by the COVID-19. With mandatory closures and restrictions churches are facing an unprecedented challenge. However, virtual meeting platforms help churches stay on track during the pandemic. It is essential that church families meet together in some capacity; celebrating the Divine Liturgy, participating at Bible Study classes or other social and educational online activities.
A few months ago, St James purchased a Zoom account for church virtual meetings and in order to take advantage of this existing account, since I am preparing for my beloved St. James family members some religious educational, Armenian linguistic and social virtual activities.
Starting in January on a weekly basis I will virtually conduct Bible study bilingual sessions with and additional collective prayer program, Church Hymns & Sharagans teaching, Armenian Language lessons (Conversational and Reading/Writing beginner level) for my dear English-Speaking parishioners, as well as Social interacting activities; “Teatime” and “Armenian Coffee” with Fr. Haroutioun virtual bilingual hangouts on a weekly basis.
We always hope and pray that this Pandemic will end soon to be able to return to our normal life, traditional worship and social activities.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Thank you, St. James parishioners for your support of St. James Name Day! You heard our concerns, and you responded. With thanks to all of you, and some wonderful friends of St. James, we were able to collect just over $17,000 in individual donations, and in addition our Ladies Society donated $10,000. We like to think this was a wonderful success.
We held a raffle as our way to honor our Name Day in these challenging times. The prize monies were donated by two generous Parish Council members, Mrs. Lucille Bogosian and Mrs. Cindy Norian. Fr. Haroutioun pulled the winning tickets and announced the winners: Louise Bedrosian, 1st place, $1000; Ellen Ballard, 2nd place $500 and 3rd place Ayda Karakas $250. We congratulate them and thank all of you for participating.
We would like to share that we continue to remain in fiscally challenging times. The monies we raised have been gratefully earmarked toward our utility bills – gas, electric, phones, etc. We very much meant it when we said we needed to keep our lights on! However, this money won’t solve all of our fiscal concerns. We continue to be challenged by the ways the pandemic has affected us, and we will continue to face these issues for the foreseeable future. We appreciate your generosity, and we look forward, with all of you, to the days when we can return in person and hopefully find ways to support the needs of our beloved St. James.

Co-chairs, Name Day
As the Christmas Season approaches and we reflect on this past year, we can definitely state that 2020 has been a most unusual and difficult year. While the future is still unpredictable, we are heartened and encouraged by the presence and support of our parishioners as witnessed on Sunday, December 13 when we celebrated our 79th Annual Name Day in outdoor church services.
Fr. Haroutioun conducted the traditional Requiem Service and read the names of our dear departed love ones under a warm and beautiful sky. They serve as a model to all of us and endow us with the strength and faith to continue their legacy for future generations.
Our special thanks to the Ladies Society for preparing the coffee and light refreshments following the services. Seta Yanikian, Chair of the Ladies Society, presented the Parish Council with a $10,000 check for their operational expenses. We are grateful to members of our Ladies Society who always stand ready to be of assistance and for their hard work and efforts during the year.
The success of this year's Annual Name Day Celebration was a raffle organized and spearheaded by our capable Name Day Co-Chairs, Cindy Norian and Patty Samarge. Through their diligence and determination they took on the enormous task of reaching out to our Armenian faithful for financial support during these uncertain times. The cash prizes were donated by our own members. Grateful thanks to Lucille Bogosian, for donating $l,000 for the first prize; and to Cindy Norian for donating the second prize of $500 and the third prize of $250, as well as the costs for the printing and mailing. Excitement reigned high as Fr. Haroutioun selected the following winners: Louise Bedrosian won the first prize of $l,000; Ellen Ballard won the second prize of $500; Ayda Karakas won the third prize of $250. Words cannot express our special thanks and deep appreciation to Co-Chairs Cindy Norian and Patty Samarge for raising approximately $18,000 from the raffle sales. A fitting climax to a most successful Name Day celebration.

Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Based on the latest announcements from the Governor and the City of Los Angeles, we are requested to adhere to the provisions declaring a “Stay-At-Home” lockdown order. However, outdoor church services are exempt, and we will be able to celebrate our 79th Annual Name Day on Sunday, December 13 on our beautiful church grounds. This tradition exemplifies the true Christian spirit as we celebrate the legacy of our deceased parishioners and clergy.
Special thanks to Patty Samarge and Cindy Norian for spearheading and planning the raffle to raise much needed funds for our church's operational expenses. The winners of the tickets will be selected following church services.

Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Currently Azerbaijani forces are doing everything in their power to capture the symbolic fortress town of Shushi. During the last weeks, Shushi as well as so many other cities and villages in Artsakh suffered major and countless damages and destructions, several civilians and Armenian soldiers were killed. The ongoing aggression against Artsakh is a continuation of the 1915 Armenian Genocide by Turkey. The international recognition of independence of the Republic of Artsakh is the most practical way to end war crimes against Artsakh.
Today, the Armenian church celebrated the feast of Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Saint Michael the Archangel according to our church fathers is the leader of the army of God, as well as the defender of Christians. We strongly believe and hope that God Almighty is fighting on behalf of Armenians in this bitter war, strengthening the arms of our brave soldiers. We pray and ask our Almighty Lord to commission Archangel Michael with the mighty heavenly hosts to visit our Motherland Artsakh and defend and protect our innocent brothers and sisters, who are victimized and persecuted by the most bloodthirsty barbarians of Azerbaijani forces.
In these challenging times the people of Armenia and Artsakh need not only our prayers as well as our support. Your generous and sacrificial giving will significantly aid the families of innocent victims and Artsakh. Please make checks payable to Armenia Fund or Western Diocese and mail it to St. James church. All donations will be immediately sent to Armenia Fund. You may also use the link below making an online direct donation to Armenia Fund.
May our Lord reward you very abundantly and keep safe and unshaken our Motherland Armenia and Artsakh!
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James parishioner and Friend,
Our Diocesan Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian had announced for this weekend a three-day lent and fasting period in support of the Armenian soldiers in the front lines in Artsakh. The Lent period has already begun and will conclude on Sunday, October 25, with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.
Why fasting for Artsakh?
Fasting means humbling oneself before God. It is a desperate prayer of total reliance upon God. Our brave soldiers in Artsakh are fighting against massive evil powers with the miraculous help of our All-powerful God. We need to pray unceasingly because St. James the apostle says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16). We strongly believe that our sincere fasting prayers will make a powerful difference in the lives of our most beloved sisters and brothers during the war in Armenia & Artsakh.
In these challenging times the people of Armenia and Artsakh need not only our prayers as well as our support. Your generous and sacrificial giving will significantly aid the families of innocent victims and Artsakh. Please make checks payable to St. James Armenian Church, and write “Artsakh Support Fund” on the memo line and mail it to St. James church. All donations will be sent to Armenia Fund. You may also use the link below making an online donation to Armenia Fund.
May our Lord reward you very abundantly and keep safe and unshaken our Motherland Armenia and Artsakh!
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Sunday School students.
I am sure that you’ve heard, about the ongoing war, in our motherland Armenia and Artsakh. Since September 27, 2020, Azerbaijani forces are attacking our Armenian borders and hurting our brave solders and innocent civilians, including children at your age. Unfortunately, the only way to have peace in our county is to fight against the enemies.
As Christians, of course, we don’t like to fight, but we know that sometimes, we have to fight, to prevent other armies from doing bad things. We fight, to keep ourselves or other people safe. And then, after the war is over, we thank the soldiers for doing such a great job and bringing peace. You know that the soldiers risk their lives to bring peace. Jesus talked about how important making peace is. He said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Our Armenian brave soldiers are children of God, and they help, make peace all over the world, and that’s why we thank them today. I am very pleased that you have already sent to our brave soldiers your supportive online thank you cards and pictures. It is incredibly meaningful and comforting, for our soldiers, receiving from you those loving messages. I am also very grateful to your parents, who are generously donating to Armenia Fund for humanitarian help, during these difficult times in Armenia and Artsakh. I am very proud of you!
My beloved students, our people in Armenia and Artsakh need our prayers. You know that prayer is a powerful thing. Let’s pray for our brothers and sisters in Artsakh and for our brave soldiers. “Dear Father, we remember and honor those who have served to preserve and protect the freedom and peace in Armenia and Artsakh. We also pray for the day when we won’t need to have wars or armies or soldiers. We pray for the time when everyone will do what is right. But until that time, we thank You for the men and women who are brave enough to fight, so that they can make peace. Amen.”
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Parishioner and Friend,
Yesterday, Azerbaijani military forces ignoring again the humanitarian cease-fire agreement, reached by Armenia and Azerbaijan in Moscow, continued their violent aggressions against Artsakh, by launching attacks on the southern borders of Artsakh.
Last Thursday Azerbaijani armed forces had also bombarded the most beautiful Holy Savior Cathedral, the symbol of Shushi. The Cathedral of Shushi has been targeted several times by Azerbaijani forces. Last week’s bombardment follows the continuous strikes of civilian-populated areas, trying to evacuate the local population from their motherland.
In these most trying times of life and death we invite our beloved St. James parishioners to extend a helping hand to our Motherland and Armenia. Please support Artsakh with your most sacrificial donations, following the generous example of our Primate and the clergy of Western Diocese. His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, collectively with the reverend clergy of the Western Diocese have already donated $100,000 to Armenia Fund, in memory of our martyred soldiers. In his appeal, Archbishop Derderian said, “Let us keep our conscience awake and with a personal example put our faith in action. Moreover, everywhere and every time, let us remind each other of our patriotic obligation. Our brave soldiers offer their lives for the Motherland. What we do is only a droplet compared to their sacrifice, a heartfelt tribute to their heroism.”
On Sunday, October 11, 2020, in the afternoon we also encourage all St. James parishioners to participate at the “MARCH FOR VICTORY”. See the flyer below. Once again thousands of Armenians should march together demanding justice and immediate cease fire in Artsakh.
In these challenging times the people of Armenia and Artsakh need our prayers and support. Your generous and sacrificial giving will greatly aid the families of innocent victims and Artsakh.
We were able to hold indoor church services on Sunday, September 27, implementing and following the state and county guidelines. Security concerns were expressed for the safety of our parishioners due to the large-scale war launched by Azerbaijan against Artsakh/Nagorno Karabakh early Sunday morning. In the interest of time, Eddie der Aprahamian provided access to Deputy Sheriff Joseph Grigorian if the need arose. Thankfully, there were no Our church services on Sunday, October 4, were very moving for the 36 parishioners in attendance, as special requiem hokihankist services were performed for the 215 fallen soldiers in Artsakh. This requiem service was held, not only at St. James, but in all Armenian churches.
It is apparent that the people of Armenia and Artsakh need our prayers and support. Parishioners made generous donations to aid the families of innocent victims and Artsakh. All donations will be sent to the Armenia Fund.
We again urge our Armenian faithful Armenians to immediately send their donations to St. James Armenian Church to aid and support of the heroic soldiers and the destitute families in Artsakh.

As you are aware, on September 27, 2020 early in the morning, the Azerbaijani military violently and recklessly launched a massive cross-border artillery attack on Artsakh, causing the loss of innocent civilian lives and Armenian soldiers.
On behalf of St. James Church Community, we wrote a petition letter to our Representative, the Honorable Karen Bass, U.S. House of Representatives of our district, expressing our concerns and frustration regarding these horrific attacks, urging her to condemn it and take action along with other members of the House to stop arming Azerbaijan immediately, and cease any and all military assistance to Azerbaijan and again stand against Azerbaijani aggression as the U.S. did in the 1990’s.This past week, the Western Diocese conducted at St. Leon Cathedral, nightly evening prayer services for the repose of souls of the fallen soldiers and peaceful civilians. It was another beautiful sunny day when approximately 100 parishioners attended outdoor church services on Sunday, September 20, 2020. We were honored with the presence of Rev. Fr. Vazken Movsesian and Archpriest Fr. Arshag Khatchadourian.
Parishioners were carefully screened, wore masks and observed social distancing. They remained after church services and enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie.

I hope this new digital format can provide you better connectivity with St. James and Diocesan activities and religious and spiritual resources.During these difficult times, It's a great spiritual comfort reading the most uplifting "PRAYERS FROM THE HEART" written by our Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. Today, with a very heavy heart and sadness we announce the sad news of the passing of our own and most beloved Mr. Armen Hampar. Our Diocesan Primate's most beautiful words best portrays Mr. Hampar's dedication and love for the Armenian Church, when we read from his pen; “Today, the Western Diocese lost one of its outstanding pillars who has carried in his heart and soul the vision of the founders of this Diocese... We lost an extraordinary man with an exceptional love and dedication for the Armenian Church, whose departure from this world orphaned this 93 year-old institution.” Our deepest condolences go to Mrs. Nora Hampar and the most beloved Hampar family members. May our Merciful Lord rest his soul in peace. Amen!

Dear St. James Sunday School family!
Welcome back to St. James Sunday School!
The most fundamental mission that our Sunday school has is to help our most beloved students to answer God’s Call. As the children of our Almighty God we are invited to live according to our Lord’s commandments by studying the word of God, worshiping and praising Him and learning together, as one family.
As you know, this year, unfortunately, due to the COVID19 pandemic, we won’t be able to attend physically our Sunday School, however the classes will be held on Zoom and our most dedicated teachers, under the capable leadership of Superintendent Lauren Vartanian are determined to teach our children, promoting spiritual growth.
We pray and ask our Almighty God to fill our Sunday School teachers with the spirit of dedication and may our Loving Lord shower upon them, His Divine wisdom and abundant blessings!
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian

Even though we have a record breaking heatwave, we also had a record breaking outdoor Church service on August 16 when we celebrated the Grape Blessing Ceremony. Approximately 107 parishioners attended the outdoor church service, exceeding the number of parishioners who attended in 2019. We are blessed with accessible and large church grounds to accommodate our parishioners. It is heartening and comforting to know that even in these unpredictable and difficult times we must pause and appreciate that we can still come together and worship our Lord. We follow the state and county guidelines to make sure our parishioners are safe. Our parish council members assist with screening, offering sprays and hand sanitizers and making sure they practice social distancing. We thank Michael Tachejian, Ann Iskenderian, Yeghia der Aprahamian, Fimi and Vartan Zerounian, Jenia Baghdanian, Karine Baghdanian and our secretary Linda Kalayjian for their assistance. Special thanks to Danny Akarakian at the piano; our choir director Manik Manukyan and to the five Deacons at the altar. Our sincere appreciation to the Ladies Society, chaired by Seta Yanikian, for washing and bagging the grapes. We are grateful to our parishioners for donating the grapes as well as their financial assistance during these uncertain times. Hope you will join us next Sunday, August 23, for a wonderful and unique outdoor church service.

Dear St. James Parishioners:
It was another beautiful sunny day as approximately 40 of our parishioners attended our outdoor church services on Sunday, August 9. We are pleased that during these difficult and uncertain days, many of us turn to God and to his word for comfort, direction and peace.
We are blessed at St. James with inviting and expansive church grounds to hold our service.
We continue to be cautious and our Parish Council members follow every safety measure, including screening, masks, sanitizers, hand sprays and to adhere to social distancing.,
We look forward to next Sunday, August 16, when we celebrate the Assumption of the Holy Virgin and Grape Blessing. We invite our faithful and friends to attend our outdoor service and participate in the Grape Blessing ceremony. Grapes will be distributed respecting the California Covid-19 safety guidelines. As in previous years, we welcome donations of grapes and respectfully request they be delivered by Friday August 14. Members of our St. James Ladies Society will be meeting on Saturday, August 19 to wash and bag the grapes.
Please join us this next Sunday to celebrate Grape Blessing Day and for a unique and wonderful outdoor service.

Dear Parishioner and Friend,
On Tuesday, a massive devastating explosion at the port of Beirut, killed more than 150 people and injured several thousands of people. The blast affected the Armenian community as well, which suffered loss of life, injuries, and damage to community institutions, homes, and businesses. This unfortunate catastrophe comes in the midst of a very hard economic crisis, with rising unemployment and increased food insecurity across the country. There are no words to express the sense of hopelessness, despair, and anger that people are feeling right now. So much relief work is needed. So many families will need long-term care and so much needs to be rebuilt.
Today, I urge and invite all my caring and generous St. James parishioners to extend their helping hand and support the afflicted people of Lebanon. At the end of the Divine Liturgy we will conduct a Requiem Service and offer special prayers for the souls of the deceased, speedy recovery of the wounded and consolation for the bereaved and homeless.
Let’s pray for our brothers and sisters in Beirut, for those who have lost loved ones, for those facing loss of homes and livelihoods and for all people living in poverty in this most beautiful country of Cedars.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian
Dear St. James Parishioners:
It was a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze as approximately 35 parishioners attended St. James church service on August 2 held outdoors on the church grounds. Fr. Haroutioun celebrated the Holy Badarak with five deacons and choir director Manik Manukyan, ablyassisted by Ted Hayrapetian.
We were heartened and encouraged by the presence and support of our loyal and faithful parishioners. As Fr. Haroutioun stated in his sermon: "There is no denying the impact this pandemic is having on all of us, mental health, fear, depression, loneliness, feelings of isolation, financial worries and job security are just a few of the challenges people are facing. Human beings are social creatures who need one another, personal interaction, hugs, human touch and conversation. We need to feel love and express love.
Special thanks to Michael Tachejian, Ann Iskenderian, Yeghia der Aprahamian, Karine Baghdanian and our erstwhile secretary Linda for their assistance. Parishioners are required to wear a mask or face covering for the duration of their attendance. In addition, hand sanitizers and sprays are made available as well as adhering to social distancing.
These are extraordinary times but the support and presence of our parishioners allows us to continue limited operations and to guarantee that we are able to make a successful return to our previous operations after this crisis has passed.
We invite our parishioners and friends to join us next Sunday for an unusual and wonderful outdoor service.

Dear St. James Parishioners:
I hope that this message finds you and your families safe and well.We have strictly followed the directives from the Governor and the new restrictions that have impacted on our lives, as well as places of worship. On Sunday, July 19 we held our first Badarak outdoors and will continue to do so until we are informed that we can return to the inside of our sanctuary.
Parishioners are required to wear a mask or face covering during their attendance and to practice social distancing. In addition, screenings and hand sanitizers are provided by the members of the parish council. These are extraordinary times, but we are proud that with the support of our clergy, deacons, choir members and parishioners we are allowed to continue limited operations until we are able to make a successful return to our regular church operations after this crisis has passed.
Please join us this coming Sunday, August 2 for a heartwarming and wonderful outdoor service.
God be with you and your families.

Dear Parishioner and Friend.
Last Sunday, while we were celebrating the Feast of Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we heard these words below uttered from the mouth of St. Peter the apostle, on the mountain of Thabor ; 'Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." The apostle Peter was very excited and overjoyed glorifying our almighty Lord in the nature under the sky. Indeed, It was an open-air worship.
Similarly, last Sunday we were so happy and fortunate to be able to conduct Badarak (Divine Liturgy) services outdoors on our beautiful church patio area, in the freash air. We were able to use the same portable sanctified altar that we used in Gogian Hall back in the 1960s. We continued to practice and follow the same state and county guidelines of social distancing, wearing masks, screening, etc.
At the end of the services It was such a joy to bless Archy and Carla Kotoytanz on their 25th Wedding Anniversary. We are so appreciative of this wonderful couple with their generous support and dedication to our beloved St. James church. Carla has also dedicated her time by serving on the parish council a few years ago. May the Lord give them many more blessed and happy years together.
Everyone enjoyed the services and so happy to see one another. We look forward continuing our worship services throughout the summer depending upon the status of the pandemic.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian

Please take a moment to look at our church website (https://stjamesla.net) and you will get a complete history, record, and recognition of St. James since its establishment in 1942. Our special thanks to Pauline Mukhalian for her initiative in creating the website. Dr. Jeffrey Bogosian has worked diligently with Pauline and helped guide and assist her in bringing it up to date and providing useful and informative information.
We need to continue to acknowledge Dr. Bogosian and express our thanks and appreciation for all he has done in the short time he has been on the parish council. He has redone the computer financial program and worked with our secretary in adopting more efficient methods. In doing so, we did not have to buy a new computer or hire a bookkeeper. He has been successful in applying and receiving an SBA loan during these uncertain and difficult times; he purchased a new cell phone for the church in order that checks can be deposited without going to the bank.It is apparent that he is constantly looking for new innovative ways for us to be part of the 2lst Century. Dr. Bogosian has earned and deserves recognition from our parishioners and parish council.
